There have been some events occurring within the 5th Regiment as well as the ANV that the Company should be aware of. The ANV was an incorporated organization up to about 2 years ago when the current staff let the incorporation lapse. This has now left the organization and it's leadership exposed to liability issues which we all hope may never arise. Currently, we (the company commanders and each regiment command) are not sure whether the ANV will reincorporate or not. The ANV staff is being encouraged to do so. I will keep y'all updated with this issue. Our Col. Miller (Duffie) has always encouraged the 5th Reg. to incorporate itself and now this is something wise to do since the ANV is no longer incorporated. The benefit of incorporation is primarily reducing the members risk to liability exposure. If something were to happen that affected the 5th, it's individual members, and more importantly, it's leadership (which includes company commanders) are protected by the corporation from such liability exposure. At the 145th Manassas event this past weekend, the 5th Reg. held a regimental meeting to discuss the issue of incorporation. During the meeting two motions were made and voted on. The first was to allow the Col. to investigate and pursue the process for incorporation of the 5th Reg. or becoming an LLC (Limited Liability Company). This means Col. Miller will research and determine the pros and cons of either direction. He will also have the help of an attorney who is a member of the 5th and has offered his firm to work "pro-bono" toward this effort. The vote was unanimously in favor of the motion. The second motion was to include in the incorporation or LLC the purchase of professional liability insurance. This was suggested by Mike Snyder and John Stone as a protection for the members and it's leadership if someone were to conduct dishonest business on behalf of the regiment and would cause financial hardship due to such business practices. The cost of this insurance is minimal and should not change the current dues amount. This vote too, was unanimously in favor of the motion.
These issues are being addressed because the regiment as well as the ANV are growing. I remember the ANV years ago that maybe had a total contingent of 1000 members. Not anymore! Total membership of the ANV is in excess of 4000 members and has a treasury of more than $22,000. Unfortunately, we must protect ourselves from things in today's society. And the same trend is occurring within the 5th Regiment. We have picked up two new companies this year.
If anyone of you have an opinion or comment on the matter, I am open to listen and bring it to the leadership if it needs to be heard.
I will continue to keep y'all updated as these issues develop.

I hope all is well with everyone. I wish to take this time to express a concern I have about our unit. This year has been and is a light year for reenacting and therefore may seem that interest with the unit is low. I hope that the spirit in the unit continues to remain high and that next season we can move forward with the energy needed to recruit more members and attend a few more events. I hope y'all still have the interest to attend an event even though not everyone will be there. I have always had hopes to start a unit that was open to everyone and to encourage new people to join us to promote many things including our heritage, new friendships, a large unit disciplined on the field (it really does look good!!and can make us all proud a little!), blah...blah...blah! So are y'all out there? I'd like to hear from you. Share your ideas. Get the newsletter goin' again! (I think everyone enjoyed that). Recruit!
There has been some interest expressed for Pritzers Woods in Gettysburg. I will get some more details out to y'all about times on when. I do know that it will take place in September and we will be with the 28th Virginia. That's John Stones unit. This is a recruiting drive for them...so we can compliment them a little but I am thinking we could separate from them too and recruit a little for ourselves, do some drill, and talk to the spectators. Afterall, the 28th and 24th are central to two different geographical locations.
It's funny, when I get together with a couple reenactors I get really excited about the hobby. When I talk to coworkers, friends, or anybody that asks me about the hobby I get excited about it. I hope y'all do too and can promote the hobby and our unit. Maybe I've gone a little overboard with the hobby but I don't think so. It is good clean fun! (maybe a little hot sometimes!!). Hope to hear from y'all soon and I hope y'all share among yourselves too. I'll see you on the field soon. Thanks

Insurance and dues money is long past due for those of you who have not yet paid. Please do so as soon as possible. Additionally, registrations have been made for all those who have informed the 24th that they will attend a specific event. If you have not sent those fees to the 24th, please forward these too. You can make all checks payable to Brad Harris. Thanks.

This memo page is intended to post information to members that would not be posted on the dispatch page. This would include general info, opinions, ideas, thoughts, etc. The dispatch page is intended primarily for announcements and time sensitive information. If any member has information they wish to share with the unit, please contact the web master, who is me!(Brad), either by phone or thru the 24th's e-mail address and I'll be sure to get it onto the page. Also, I am open to discuss any ideas to improve these new pages and/or any other part of this site.
